La complessità si nasconde nella semplicità

Ieri mi sono guardato (ovviamente su 55 pollici 4k) il film in questione. Dopo avere letto e ascoltato molte recensioni mi aspettavo qualcosa di molto bello dal punto di vista visuale ma di scontato e noioso dal punto di vista di sceneggiatura, regia, personaggi. Beh, non è così.

Il film (che poi è solo la prima parte di una saga di quattro) sviluppa le tematiche sì in modo lineare, ma niente affatto banale. Non c’è tutta questa suddivisione per cui i Navii sarebbero i “buoni selvaggi” contrapposti agli umani cattivi, tanto per iniziare. Fra loro ci sono gli stronzi, come impara il piccolo Sully, anche se poi sanno redimersi. Fra loro ci sono forme di razzismo e chiusura mentale. E anche il più cattivo dei cattivi inizia a tentennare in alcune scene: alla fine il vero bastardo è chi vede la natura solo come risorsa e non ne coglie l’equilibrio e la complessità. Un po’ come nella nostra realtà, la banalità del male.

Complessità che si ritrova anche nei rapporti fra i personaggi. Innanzitutto sono attori veramente formidabili, tutti quanti, e il nuovo sistema di trasformazione della recitazione da attore a personaggio CGI ha raggiunto livelli che non avrei creduto possibili fino a poco tempo fa. In secondo luogo la storia si sviluppa in modo anti-mitico rispetto al primo film, dove una certa retorica poteva anche infastidire (non dico altro per non fare spoiler) e alcune scelte del protagonista possono apparire assurde all’inizio ma acquistano senso nello svolgersi della trama.

L’eterno ritorno, altra tematica che viene rappresentata nella storia, contrapposta a una filosofia di non violenza – che come spesso capita viene giocoforza abbandonata al momento del bisogno estremo di difesa – a mio vedere prepara per futuri sviluppi interessanti.  Mi aspetto che nei prossimi film il rapporto fra le due specie si evolva e che si evolvano anche le mentalità di entrambi i popoli (che ovviamente sono simboli di aspetti della nostra specie).

È un film che non basta guardare una volta, tale è il lavoro incredibile di ambientazione e le soluzioni tecnologiche e cinematografiche adottate, e vale la pena di assistere alle oltre due ore di “dietro le quinte”.

Volenti o nolenti, Cameron fa la storia del cinema.

Complexity hides in simplicity

Yesterday I watched (obviously on 55 inch 4k) the film in question. After reading and listening to many reviews, I was expecting something very beautiful from a visual point of view but obvious and boring from the point of view of script, direction, characters. Well, it’s not like that.

The film (which is only the first part of a saga of four) develops the themes in a linear way, but by no means trivial. There’s not all this division that the Navii would be the “good savages” versus evil humans, to begin with. Among them are the assholes, as little Sully learns, even if they know how to redeem themselves. Among them are forms of racism and closed-mindedness. And even the baddest of the bad guys starts to waver in some scenes: in the end, the real bastard is someone who sees nature only as a resource and doesn’t grasp its balance and complexity. A bit like in our reality, the banality of evil.

Complexity that is also found in the relationships between the characters. First, they’re truly terrific actors, all of them, and the new CGI actor-to-character transformation system has reached levels I wouldn’t have thought possible until recently. Secondly, the story develops in an anti-mythical way compared to the first film, where a certain rhetoric could even annoy (I won’t say anything else to avoid spoilers) and some choices of the protagonist may appear absurd at the beginning but make sense as the story unfolds. plot.

The eternal return, another theme that is represented in the story, as opposed to a philosophy of non-violence – which, as often happens, is forced to be abandoned at the time of extreme need for defense – in my view prepares for future interesting developments. I expect that in the next films the relationship between the two species will evolve and that the mentalities of both peoples will also evolve (which of course are symbols of aspects of our species).

It is a film that it is not enough to watch once, such is the incredible work of setting and the technological and cinematographic solutions used, and it is worth attending the more than two hours of “behind the scenes”.

Like it or not, Cameron makes cinema’s history.

Un modesto omaggio a un capolavoro

The Montecristo Project è ricco di ispirazioni e citazioni a quello che considero il capolavoro della fantascienza cinematografica, 2001 Odissea nello Spazio. Quindi non posso esimermi dal pubblicare anche qui il piccolo omaggio che ho osato creare in occasione del 50° anniversario, il 2 aprile 2017.
